I chose to do my portrait emulation using the photographer Irving Penn. Penn was born June 16,1917 and Plainfield, New Jersey. Penn attended the Philadelphia Museum School of Industrial Art, and studied drawing, graphics, and industrial art. One day someone Penn got offered a job with Vogue magazine. He was also told that he should try photography, and he ended up enjoying it, and becoming successful. Penn died October 7 of 2009, but up until his death he photographed for Vogue magazine. Penn photographed fashion, still lifes, movie stars, food, nudes, flowers, makeup, and 158 covers. I chose this artist to emulate, because I found his photographs visually appealing to look at, and his fashion photography captures my attention.
In Irving Penn's photograph, the colors are very bright and vibrant. The image is of a certain angle of a face, with different colored paints smeared all over the lips. The photo appears to be taken in a dark room with a bright light point of the face. It looks like the model for the photo was wearing light foundation or face paint to capture the image. The models mouth is opened just a bit, but not enough to see the teeth. You can really see the texture in the paint on the model's lips.
I recreated the photograph very relatively similar to the original. I used the same colors of paint in the same areas as the model appeared to have in the original photograph. I could not get the colors to come out as vibrant as they appear in the original photo. I also position my mouth the same as the model in the original image. I started off by taking the photo further back holding the camera from my face, and then cropping it to look similar to the original photograph. My face is not the exact same shape as the model's so the position and cropping is a bit off. Although the images are not identical, they are very close in similarity/
